Random facts of Delaware Colony





  • The ships that brought Peter Minuit and the New Sweden company were called Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip.







  • The final spot of the fort was decided because the settlement wanted to be close enough to the Lenape Indians to be able to trade beaver pelts with them.







  • The Dutch built a fort 7 miles away from the Swedish fort so they could menace them.







  • The reason for the destruction the first fort in Delaware was a misunderstanding between the Lenape indians and this group called the New Netherlands. The New Netherlands people got massacred.







  • The first governor was Johan Printz. He weighted over 400 pounds.


  • The Lenape Indians called him "Big Belly."







  • Delaware colony was a melting pot of countries or ethnicities.







  • William Penn was granted Pennsylvania and then later received Delaware.







  • William Penn owned Delaware until shortly after the Revolutionary war.

  • Delaware had two different names changes before it became well.... Delaware. It was called New Netherlands and New Sweden.







  • Delaware got it's name from the Delaware river and the river was named after Lord de la Warr, the governor of the Jamestown Colony.
